Mental health days are an invaluable tool in a time when the prevalence of startling events only seems to be increasing. It’s okay – advisable, even – to give yourself room to breathe, to allow the great Greek tragedy of civic life to go ignored and un-responded to for a little while. Maximal alarm is an invitation to burnout.
Having giving myself a few days of self-imposed absence from writing, I can once again ruminate on the sinister path we’re headed down without wanting to destroy my electronic devices and expatriate to Namibia. Take heed from one who knows: sometimes the best thing one can do is nothing.
