On The Nose

Give him a chance. He’s our president now, they said. He’ll realize the enormity of running a country and rise to the occasion, they said. Politicians make false promises all the time, they said. Instead, Donald Trump has made it his mission to delegitimize nearly three million votes, continues his petty Twitter feuds and just took the next step in his Muslim ban.

In his aptly titled essay In Front of Your Nose, George Orwell wrote “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” Friends and family who place blind faith in authority and American exceptionalism may tell you you’re too smart to be spouting nonsense. It’s nothing more than a tactic to shut you down by appealing to your vanity.

Don’t let people who don’t have your best interests at heart define the level of acceptable discourse. Be “unreasonable”. Be “hysterical”. Be true to yourself.
